{"id":387,"date":"2013-02-09T21:41:10","date_gmt":"2013-02-10T04:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/?p=387"},"modified":"2013-02-09T21:48:30","modified_gmt":"2013-02-10T04:48:30","slug":"apple-varieties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/?p=387","title":{"rendered":"Apple Varieties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The four apple\u00a0trees we planted at TRMV in the early 90&#8217;s, going clockwise, are Jonagold, Akane, Summer Red and Chehalis.\u00a0 These\u00a0trees have been overgrown by\u00a0Poplar trees to the south, boxwood to the north, and cherry trees to the west.\u00a0 I am hoping to\u00a0clean some of this out this year to allow for more light and hopefully improve their diminishing productivity.\u00a0\u00a0 The following is some information I&#8217;ve been able to pick up about these varieties.<\/p>\n<p>The Jonagold is a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Jonathan apple.\u00a0 Color is red and yellow.\u00a0 Its a good all-purpose apple, good for eating and cooking.\u00a0 Fruit keeps for 3 months in cold storage.\u00a0 The Jonagold has been called the finest dessert and eating apple.\u00a0 It is semisweet, full flavored and is crisp and juicy.\u00a0 The Jonagold is a mid season variety, apples ripen in mid Oct.\u00a0 This apple needs a polinizer but it does not polinize other varieties in return.\u00a0 Expect to see some scab.\u00a0 The tree will fruit annually.<\/p>\n<p>The Akane, a cross between a Jonathan and Pearmaine, is an outstanding apple for both fresh eating and cooking.\u00a0\u00a0This is my most reliable apple.\u00a0 It always produces a good number of fruit.\u00a0 Apples are bright\u00a0red in color with white flesh and are full-flavored, tart, and sprightly, with a &#8220;grapelike&#8221; flavor.\u00a0 Texture is firm and crisp.\u00a0 Its a great apple for organic orchards since it is resistant to scab and mildew and reliably bears fruit\u00a0every year.\u00a0 It is considered an early to mid season variety, ripening\u00a0from early to mid Sept.\u00a0 Akane needs a polinizer and is a good polinizer in return.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have much information about the Summer Red.\u00a0 It is a good polinator, bearing small red apples early in the season.\u00a0 Apples tend to be scabby.<\/p>\n<p>The Chehalis is a lovely tree\u00a0baring yellow-green skinned apples with white flesh.\u00a0 Fruit is sweet and juicy, good for both eating and cooking.\u00a0 It is considered an early to mid season variety, ripening mid August to late Sept.\u00a0 Chehalis needs a polinator and is a good polinator in return.\u00a0 An excellent organic apple as it is resistant to both scab and mildew.\u00a0 This variety is known to be highly productive, though that has not been the case here.\u00a0 I really like the flavor of this\u00a0apple but it is a little soft and meally.\u00a0\u00a0 It makes great applesauce.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The four apple\u00a0trees we planted at TRMV in the early 90&#8217;s, going clockwise, are Jonagold, Akane, Summer Red and Chehalis.\u00a0 These\u00a0trees have been overgrown by\u00a0Poplar trees to the south, boxwood to the north, and cherry trees to the west.\u00a0 I am hoping to\u00a0clean some of this out this year to allow for more light and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/387"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=387"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/387\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":389,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/387\/revisions\/389"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=387"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=387"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=387"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
