{"id":189,"date":"2009-08-23T10:09:21","date_gmt":"2009-08-23T17:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/?p=189"},"modified":"2009-08-23T10:10:18","modified_gmt":"2009-08-23T17:10:18","slug":"reflecting-on-tomatoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/?p=189","title":{"rendered":"Reflecting on Tomatoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So here it is nearly the end of August and it occurs to me that there are still tomatoes I have not yet harvested.\u00a0 Seems peculair to me that they haven&#8217;t all had at least some fruit by now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First on the list of non producers is\u00a0 Early Girl.\u00a0 The plant is huge, large strong stems trying to take over the world but so far just one tasteless tomato several weeks ago.\u00a0 Maybe she just doesn&#8217;t like the weather, although the weather has had plenty of hot days and cool days.\u00a0 You&#8217;d think there would have been something to please her either way.<\/p>\n<p>Next is Fourth of July.\u00a0 It was a catchy name.\u00a0 I watched two large green fruits hanging there since the plant was purchased at the Master Gardener&#8217;s sale.\u00a0 The Rutgers have not done anything this year either, although I take the blame for that since I waited too long to plant them.\u00a0 Liked them too much and wanted a &#8216;special&#8217; place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My favorite eating tomato so far has been Italian Heritage.\u00a0 Huge fruits, very meaty (few seeds) and fabulous taste.\u00a0 Only problem with this one is to bring a pruner to cut the fruit from the plant.\u00a0 They are so strongly suspended that they are impossible to break off by hand.<\/p>\n<p>Brandywine has produced a nice tomoto so far.\u00a0 It weighs in at 1lb 14 ozs and measures nearly six inches long.\u00a0 Its like six smaller tomatoes combined.<\/p>\n<p>Sweet Million is still my favorite cherry tomato.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t believe the huge clusters of fruit these plants are consistently producing, and they are nice and sweet.\u00a0 They have the best taste of all the grape and cherry tomatoes I&#8217;ve tried.\u00a0 The slugs really love them too.<\/p>\n<p>Big surprize has been La Roma.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never grown a roma tomato before and this one has been an excellent producer.\u00a0 The fruit is tasty, plentiful,\u00a0\u00a0uniform\u00a0\u00a0and\u00a0great \u00a0for cooking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So here it is nearly the end of August and it occurs to me that there are still tomatoes I have not yet harvested.\u00a0 Seems peculair to me that they haven&#8217;t all had at least some fruit by now.\u00a0 First on the list of non producers is\u00a0 Early Girl.\u00a0 The plant is huge, large strong [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/189"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=189"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/189\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":194,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/189\/revisions\/194"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=189"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=189"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/garden.mygreatvet.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=189"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
